Create instructions for a hobby or job that you are very familiar with. Your instructions should be written for an audience with no experience performing the task or procedure. Employ formatting techniques, visual aids, and wording techniques that are mentioned in your reading for this week. Include an appropriate introduction, a list of equipment and materials, any necessary cautions or warnings, and an effective conclusion. Limit your instructions to a one page document.

just a quick introductory guide i had to do for one of my classes.

The Fundamentals of Paintball
This guide is to teach you the fundamentals of the sport of paintball. While media portrayal of paintball has become more positive over the years, it is still important to educate potential players and the public of the proper terminology and rules required to play this game safely.

Gear

Mask: this is unarguably the most important piece of equipment. Its what protects your eyes, mouth, ears and face while you play. It should NEVER be taken off while in a game.

Marker: this is the “gun” that you use to shoot paintballs with. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of different models out there, some realistic looking, some not.

Hopper and paintballs: the hopper sits on top of the marker and holds around 200 paintballs. Paintball shells are made from the same gelatin as medicine pills and filled with glycol and crayon wax, giving it a gooey texture.

Air tank: there are two main types of air tanks, which are used to propel the paintball. One type uses compressed air, while the other uses CO2 (carbon dioxide). For the most part, any marker can use compressed air, but most high end markers can be damaged if you use CO2.

Rules & Safety

The fundamentals of paintball are pretty simple, think of it as a game of long-distance Tag: two teams start on opposite ends of the field. When the referee blows the whistle or yells Go!, both teams move towards each other and try to eliminate players on the opposite team by shooting them. A player is out when a paintball breaks on their body or any part of their gear. If the paintball bounces off, it doesn’t count as a hit, and they can continue to play. There are many variations of the game. Some require you to capture your opponent’s flag, some are attack and defend, and some are straight elimination games. The game variations are only limited by imagination.

As far as safety goes, you should ALWAYS make sure to test your marker at a chronograph station to make sure that it is shooting at a safe velocity. There is usually a referee or experienced player if you need help. Most fields have a 10’ tag rule where you should call “tag” to eliminate a person instead of attempting to shoot at them. Also, as soon as you leave a field, you should always insert a barrel blocking device to prevent a ball from leaving the barrel in the event of an accidental discharge. This should stay on your marker at all times when it is aired up and you are not in a game.
